Why Now?
You won't engage in therapy if you are ambivalent: you will know when you are ready. You may not know exactly which directions or solutions will improve your life, but you are ready when you know you want help. Although I do provide long term psychotherapy, most of my work is short term and results-oriented. Once the problem is properly understood, I believe that focusing on the solution more often results in relief of painful symptoms and sustained change.

Medication
Regarding the use of psychotherapeutic medication, there is always some risk in taking a drug to assist you with a psychological or behavioral problem. The benefits should outweigh the risks. I am not ambivalent about medication: I have seen it change lives for the better. I have also seen it used unnecessarily and inappropriately, which does nothing to contribute to long term and sustainable happiness. The nature of the problem and severity of your symptoms will determine my recommendation for a medication evaluation.

Help Within a Context
I do not believe it is possible to isolate a concern or problem from its context. There is in my experience no line between mind and body: the distinction is philosophical. It has little to do with our everyday existence, which includes our history, our present moment, our hopes and dreams, our gifts, and the challenges we face from the world around us and from within.

Engaging in therapy isn't always easy: it is a commitment to a process of change.
