Substance Abuse Professional Services Consulting
Every year at the end of my stay on an island in Lake Michigan I go visit the local American Indian fisherman and tell him I'd like to fill my cooler with all of the whitefish and salmon that will fit for my trip home. He smiles and says, "Pretty hard to say no."
After 12 years of being a qualified Substance Abuse Professional, receiving over 60 hours of SAP training, and providing countless hours of training to CDL drivers and consulting to Designated Employer Representatives, a newly qualified SAP called me up in 2007 and said he'd like to ask me a few questions about how I practice. After about 20 minutes, he asked if he could pay me for a more comprehensive consulting package of information, forms, and consulting. All I could do is quote Skip the fisherman, "Pretty hard to say no."
If you have not already received the required training and have not passed the examination required for SAPs by 49 CFR 40.281(c), this SAP Consulting Package is not for you. I wrote this program for licensed professionals already proficient in conducting substance abuse evaluations who want to improve their SAP practice.
The CDROM
First you get a CDROM (Windows or Mac - your choice) and it contains:
• searchable versions all USDOT regulations relating to SAPs in all modes
• current USDOT guidelines for SAPs
• sample contract for doing business with an employee
• sample contract for doing business with an employer
• my personal philosophy on SAP fees and collecting them
• how to play nice and get what you want from treatment providers
• confidentiality guide that cites chapter and verse on who must share what with whom without a consent ...and when consents are required
• sample consents
• sample initial assessment letter
• sample follow up assessment letter
• sample aftercare monitoring letter
• considerations for an effective SAP marketing plan
• copyright permission to use the samples in private practice in perpetuity
The Consulting
Then we schedule time, up to four hours over a period as long as a year, to discuss the contents of the CDROM, your practice, to troubleshoot troublesome situations, and to help you make your SAP practice more effective, efficient, and oriented to the federal mandate of safeguarding the safety of the traveling public.
What This Is Not
This is not qualification training to become or renew your qualification as an SAP. This is taking what it means to be an SAP to an advanced level as a private practitioner and a Service Agent in a federal safety program.
