More About Substance Abuse Professional Services

Credentials

Why should you care about your SAP's experience and credentials? Because federal regulations state that once you have begun the SAP process, no one may change your SAP's recommendations, not even another SAP. Translation: you're stuck with whoever you hire for up to five years. Evan Peterson is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in Illinois and Licensed Masters Social Worker in Michigan. He has been providing SAP services since 1997. He passed the examination required for SAPs by 49 CFR 40.281(c) in 2003 and is qualified through 2010. In 2007, an employer he works with was audited, he was interviewed by a federal auditor, and the auditor identified no errors or omissions requiring corrective action. Simply put: he passed.

If you tested positive for drugs or alcohol on a Department of Transportation (DOT) test, you need an Substance Abuse Professional (SAP). You need an SAP you can trust because neither you nor anyone else may rely upon another SAP once the initial evaluation has been conducted: that means you're stuck with the SAP you hire for up to 5 years.

Your SAP will conduct an initial evaluation, then refer you for treatment, which is separate and at your expense: the regulations state that an SAP may not provide treatment. Your SAP will monitor your treatment, evaluate you again in person, then issue a return to duty evaluation prior to return to duty. Your employer may request that the SAP re-evaluate you at any time to review your status and need for additional treatment.

By federal regulations, the relationship between the SAP, the collection site, the lab, the Medical Review Officer, and your employer requires no onsent for release of information for free exchange of information about your status.

To arrange for SAP services, call 815-861-8800 between 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM Central Time on weekdays.

Please be prepared:
* to either meet with Mr. Peterson in Crystal Lake, Illinois, or to schedule an appointment for him to travel to your location
* to provide cash or a certified check for the entire amount of Mr. Peterson's fee for the first year of services at the first meeting
* to engage in the treatment recommended as soon as the initial evaluation is complete.
