A Radical Old Concept Rediscovered - Telling the Truth
I was invited to join an insurance network. The insurance company sent me a two page form "to request an application." Then they sent me another form that directed me to a web site to fill out a 62 page form. This insurance company's application, if accepted, meant I would have to ensure every patient was eligible and precertified, then collect their deductibles and copays, and fill out their managed care paperwork in order to balance bill the insurance company for the rest of my fee, which would be "discounted" by a certain percentage - which are those "adjustments" you see on insurance Explanation of Benefits forms. So if I wanted to get paid $70.00/hour, I needed to quote a fee closer to $125.00/hour.
If I did, I would be subject to Medicare fraud laws that say if I ever show compassion
by charging less than $125/hour because a patient lacked decent reimbursement
or had no insurance at all, I might be committing fraud. As in go to prison fraud.
I'll Work For A Copay & You Can Opt Out of Insurance
I want to work. I don't want to make up a fee I never get paid to play the
discount game with insurance companies and then be forbidden to lower my
fee out of compassion. If you want psychotherapy, I'll charge you the copay
my own insurance company charges me for the same service as my
paid in full fee to you. No gimmick: that's really what it costs.
Their nonsense costs me 30-50% of what I'd charge you.
So why not elimate the nonsense?
